Do you have any dishes to wash?
I describe this portion of my life as a “restructuring”. Just as companies ‘trim-the fat’ when they roll out their mass lay offs, I find myself giving my life a full assessment and trying to find which activities I should keep and others that I should let go. I am not a data analyst by any means but from what I can gather, washing dishes is a task that will stay on my list.
I know. You are all probably thinking “Ami, what in the world are you talking about! Washing dishes…?”. You are right to have this thought. So to the unseen masses that will be reading this post some day, let me explain. Washing dishes is a simple task that helps me to reflect on actions that I ‘want’ to take part in (like creating an animation), or should take part in (like going to the gym or praying).
I see the act of washing dishes as an activity that cultivates reflection. For me, at the age of 29 still living with my parents, I find my self constantly comparing all that I’ve done thus far with my peers. The act of ‘washing dishes’ centers me and gives me peace. After the completion of the task, I can say to myself “I did a good thing today”. Sometimes that’s enough. I hope you all are washing your dishes. Also, if you have a dishwasher, use it as well. No judgment on that one.
